Nashik Municipal Corporation (Smart City Initiative)
As technology partner for the Nashik Smart City Initiative's School Campus Automation Project, Sonet automated 100+ municipal schools for the Nashik Municipal Corporation, aligned with the Government of India's Smart Cities Mission.
The Nashik Smart City Initiative aims to modernize Nashik, Maharashtra, through sustainable practices and modern technology, aligned with the Government of India's Smart Cities Mission launched in 2015 to promote economic growth, improve quality of life, and apply technology to urban management. As part of this broader mission, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched a comprehensive School Campus Automation Project covering its network of municipal schools.
Sonet Microsystems was selected as the technology partner responsible for implementing this project across 100+ schools, with the primary objective of improving coordination among government representatives, employees and students while strengthening the accuracy and transparency of information flowing between schools and the municipal administration. This case study covers the challenges the conventional system presented and the solutions Sonet implemented to address them.
The Challenge
Outdated Physical Infrastructure
Many municipal classrooms and laboratories lacked modern equipment and resources, creating a suboptimal learning environment. The outdated infrastructure hindered both teaching effectiveness and student engagement across the network of schools NMC was responsible for.
Manual, Error-Prone Attendance Tracking
The process of tracking and reporting student attendance was manual and cumbersome across the school network, leading to inaccuracies and making it difficult to maintain reliable records at the scale of 100+ schools spread across the city.
High Dropout Rates
Persistent high dropout rates were a significant concern for NMC. Ineffective monitoring and engagement strategies made it difficult to identify at-risk students early enough to intervene, directly impacting overall educational outcomes across the network.
Manual Report Preparation
School administration officials faced real challenges with the manual preparation of reports on facilities and performance. The process was time-consuming, lacked transparency, and left open questions about the accuracy of the underlying data.
Lack of Transparency in Data
Because data preparation and reporting were done manually, stakeholders across the network found it difficult to trust the authenticity and reliability of the information being reported up to the municipal corporation.
No Structured Teacher Evaluation
There was no efficient system in place for evaluating and tracking teacher performance across the network. This lack of a structured approach made it difficult to assess teaching effectiveness or support professional development consistently at scale.
Our Solution
Digital Classroom Enhancement
Sonet introduced digital interactive panels in classrooms — a significant upgrade integrated with offline content through a Learning Management System — modernizing the educational experience with interactive, multimedia-rich learning. The project also upgraded physical infrastructure, including laboratories and classrooms, with modern technology to improve the overall learning environment.
Mobile App Integration for Attendance
A dedicated mobile application let teachers mark attendance with a single tap, dramatically simplifying a previously manual process and reducing errors. The system generates attendance reports automatically in PDF and Excel formats, giving NMC accurate, timely information that also helps address dropout monitoring by surfacing engagement patterns early.
Centralized School Management System
A comprehensive School Management System centralizes school operations from admissions and fee management to student records and academic scheduling. This streamlines administrative tasks, improves communication between stakeholders, and enhances overall efficiency — while ensuring data security and compliance with educational standards.
Head Office Management System
For a network this size, Sonet implemented a Head Office Management System (HOMS) that unifies management across every branch. HOMS gives NMC centralized control over policies, operations and reporting, along with real-time monitoring of school performance, enabling the head office to make informed decisions quickly.
Learning Management System & Biometric Solutions
An LMS supporting interactive, multimedia-rich content lets students learn at their own pace and lets teachers track progress with built-in assessment and feedback tools. Biometric attendance solutions using fingerprint or facial recognition improved both security and attendance accuracy, integrating seamlessly with the School Management System for real-time reporting.
Smart Classrooms & MIS Dashboard
Smart Classrooms equipped with interactive panels, projectors and audio systems foster a more engaging, collaborative learning environment. A Management Information System with a customizable, user-friendly dashboard gives administrators real-time analytics, letting them monitor key performance indicators and respond quickly to issues as they arise.
School Ranking & Teacher Performance Frameworks
An automated framework processes data to calculate rankings for each school against predefined criteria, eliminating manual intervention and ensuring transparent evaluation. A parallel performance evaluation system tracks teacher performance through a predefined questionnaire module, identifying specific areas for improvement and supporting a culture of continuous professional development.
